Inwood Farmhouse was once the hub of a busy working farm at the foot of the Quantock Hills in Somerset. Wind forward a few decades and following a very considered transformation, it’s now a very spacious and luxurious holiday house that sleeps up to 19 guests in 8 bedrooms and has an indoor hot tub, sauna, and a spa area with treatment rooms and a beauty bar. The style is modern and elegant, providing the perfect backdrop to large group family holidays, away days with friends, sophisticated hen weekends and corporate team building or hospitality breaks.
The house is set privately on a small complex with a café/restaurant, fishing lakes, a wedding venue, and further large group holiday accommodation (see The Granary and Quantock Barns). Just a mile away is Nether Stowey, a large but quiet village where the streets are lined with centuries old cottages, including Coleridge Cottage (NT), once home to Romantic Poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Pop into the Ancient Mariner for lunch before setting off for a walk on the aptly named Coleridge Way.
If you fancy embracing the great outdoors, go and explore the ruggedly handsome Quantock Hills; stroll up through the sun dappled combes to come out on windswept ridges where heather clads the hilltops and wild ponies roam; the views stretching out across the Bristol Channel to Wales are astonishing. Pootle about the lanes and sooner or later you’ll come to one of the picturesque villages where you can stop at a cosy country pub to try the local brew; try The Carew Arms at Crowcombe or the Bicknoller Inn at Bicknoller.
Take the young ‘uns to Tropiquaria Wildlife Park or Doniford Farm Park, maybe plan a day trip to the seaside, travelling there by steam train with the West Somerset Railway; enjoy the glorious scenery, alight at Blue Anchor or Minehead – both have long sandy beaches. For something very different, experience the untamed beauty of the little beaches at East Quantoxhead and St Audries, or go to Kilve and hunt for fossils.
Dunster is good to visit, with a medieval castle (NT) high on the hill overlooking the village, a Tall Trees Trail and a watermill where flour is still ground today. For peace and quiet, and particularly if wildlife interests you, go to Fyne Court where there are woodland walks, meadows and a tea room. Enjoy the tranquillity of The Walled Gardens of Cannington or take an amble around the lakes and follies at Hestercombe House and Gardens.
Exmoor National Park isn’t far and has so much to discover; ride the Victorian Cliff Railway from Lynton to Lynmouth, stroll out to the Valley of Rocks where wild goats graze, wander along the river at Watersmeet and see the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps. Say hello to the animals at Exmoor Zoo, find a little tea shop to stop by for a proper job cream tea.
Head off to Wells, England’s smallest city, to visit the beautiful cathedral and moated Bishop’s Palace then venture on to Wookey Hole where you can go down into the subterranean caves and see the Witch of Wookey. There’s so much to see and do within an easy drive of Inwood Farmhouse, but you know, if all you want to do is stay put and enjoy just being together and relaxing, well…who could blame you?
