Right on the doorstep is the Quantock Hills AONB; the Romantic poets Wordsworth and Coleridge tramped these hills for hours and it's easy to see how they were inspired to write some of their most famous works. Amble up through the steep wooded combes and you'll come out on wide open heaths where there are trails for walking and mountain biking; the views of the Somerset landscape stretch out over the Bristol Channel to Wales on a clear day. Holford Combe is a delight with its sun dappled glades and the descent through beech woods back to the village; cross the glen and go to The Plough Inn where you'll find a friendly welcome and hearty homemade food. While away happy hours at the seaside, travelling there by steam train with The West Somerset Railway; climb on board at Bishops Lydeard and alight at Blue Anchor or Minehead for days on the sands. Stop at Watchet, see the historic harbour, browse the museums and find the holy well. In an hour or so you can be on the Jurassic Coast where you can go fossil hunting and rockpooling at Charmouth, catch mackerel on a fishing trip at Lyme Regis, see the exhibits at Dinosaurland Fossil Museum and the marine life at the little aquarium. Venture out to the Somerset Levels for the day, visit Wells to see the majestic cathedral and moated Bishop's Palace where the swans pull on a bell at feeding time; climb the Tor at Glastonbury, have a family outing to Cheddar Gorge, or Wookey Hole.
