Large Country Houses to Rent for Weekends

When it comes to renting a house for a large group weekend away Group Stays has quite a choice. We’ve got luxury timber-clad lodges, fabulous barn conversions, gorgeous old farmhouses, English country cottages, a striking townhouse, a historic chateau, and fine country houses. How does that last one appeal? A handsome country house, set in its own private grounds, all yours for the weekend? No one to bother you, beautiful surroundings, stunning views, and all the facilities you need to keep you all amused….

We have some very dignified large country houses to rent for weekends, sleeping 13-30 people in private locations in Somerset, Wiltshire and Devon. Plenty of space and loads to see and do in the local area whether you’re a few young families with small children, a multi-generational family, a hen party or a corporate group. You can have a 2 or 3 night weekend lording it up in a splendid country house, time to relax and unwind, and if it’s for a special occasion, say a birthday or an anniversary, time to celebrate.

With views of the sea on the Somerset coast, The Old Rectory stands at the top of a sweeping driveway in the Quantock Hills. It’s an imposing red brick house that despite undergoing extensive restoration in recent years still retains much character – elegant reception rooms, a games room, bedroom suites named after the rectors and their wives who have lived here, and outside there are wide lawns with a play area, and a pretty courtyard where there’s a hot tub and patio furniture. The Old Rectory combines the best of old and new and sleeps 18 guests in 9 bedrooms.

Dating back to the 14th century, Hurstone is a Somerset longhouse on the edge of Exmoor National Park with incredible views out over the valley from almost every window. 7 bedrooms sleep 14 people and there’s room for 2 more in Z beds, plus an annexe for 2. This is a really homely place with open fires and centuries old beams; there are two sitting rooms, a games room and a dining room, and outside are ample grounds with a fantastic summerhouse, a hot tub, and a patio that runs along the entire front of the house; in the summer to sit out there beneath the wisteria that clambers up the walls is an absolute pleasure.

Just over the border in Devon, Berry House sleeps 16 in 8 bedrooms, and has an indoor heated pool, a games room and a play area. This is a rather grand looking house; impressive Georgian architecture set in picturesque English parkland where red deer come down from the Exmoor hills to feed. Inside grandeur exudes with high ceilings, big windows and elegant décor. The views out over the Batherm Valley on the edge of Exmoor are breath taking.

Actually within Exmoor National Park is Bossington Hall, an imposing house built as a gentleman’s country retreat in Edwardian times. One to impress, it stands in a very commanding position high above Porlock Vale with sweeping views of the Bristol Channel and the moors. Bossington Hall sleeps 30 people in 15 bedrooms; there are two kitchens, a games room, drawing room, dining room, and a rather baronial hall with sumptuous sofas and a huge stone fireplace. Outside are 6 acres of grounds with a mill pond, tennis court and thatched pavilion; bliss.

In Wiltshire, House on the Hill sleeps 20 guests, with room for an extra 4 (charged extra per person). There’s a lot of space, with a sitting room, drawing room, garden room, movie room, and a huge kitchen-diner that’s packed with wow factor – soaring timbers, a hand crafted chunky dining table, and a well equipped kitchen. What’s good about House on the Hill is that part of the house can be used almost as separate accommodation for a family or grandparents who like to have time away from the crowd; there’s even an additional kitchen/family room. Outside are extensive lawns, and housed separately, an open air pool and a games room. The views are amazing, stretching on and on for miles across the unspoilt countryside of the Chalke Valley.

Wayside is a modern country house in Devon with a far reaching outlook over the Blackdown Hills. It sleeps 13 guests in 5 bedrooms and has a games room, covered heated pool, hot tub, sauna, BBQ lodge, and play equipment. Inside it’s very light and airy with contemporary styling and everything you could possibly need for your large group weekend away.
