On the edge of Exmoor National Park, Grove House was built over 300 years ago as a ‘gentleman’s residence’ - by smuggler brothers, so they say! Spin forward to today and it’s a very unique large group holiday house sleeping 24 in 10 bedrooms over the 3 storey main house, an adjoining annexe and 2 self-contained Garden Rooms. It’s got charm, it’s got character, it’s got the loveliest feels, and it works really well if you have people in your group who appreciate their own space – for families with younger children, or elderly grandparents.
All yours are a covered hot tub, a games room, a playroom, and your own bar – what fun! Outside huge gardens mean joyful days in the sunshine, running around happy as larks. The chances are, so happy that you won’t really be that bothered about going out and about, but if you do, you’ll find there’s a lot to see and do.
There are days on the beach, making sandcastles at Blue Anchor or Minehead, there’s the whole of Exmoor waiting to be explored, the gorgeous little villages, the deep river valleys, the steep wooded combes, vast woodlands and the heather clad moors where red deer and wild ponies contentedly graze. Make a summit bid on Dunkery Beacon, the highest point in the park and the whole of Somerset – the views are insane, rolling on forever and ever in all directions.
Go to Dunster for a pootle around this prettiest of villages, streets lined with centuries old cottages, a few independent shops, good pubs and cafes, and high on the hill a Medieval castle (NT) where you can see the spooky dungeons. Stop at Porlock Weir to watch the world go by at the little harbour, venture over to Lynton and Lynmouth to ride the Victorian Cliff Railway, go out to the Valley of Rocks where feral goats live.
Closer to home is Tropiquaria Zoo, and something you really ought to see, Cleeve Abbey; check out the roof angels watching over you in the refectory. Go out, stay in, it’s up to you, but you’re doing it, you’re making time to be together, you’re making memories to hold on to.
