Whimbrels Barton is set in a quiet hamlet on the Somerset Levels, not far from Langport and Taunton and within easy reach of the M5, A358 and the A303. It’s a special place to stay for big family holidays or to celebrate momentous birthdays and anniversaries with your nearest and dearest.

8 bedrooms sleep 16 guests over 3 adjoining and gorgeously renovated barns; a huge living/entertaining room gives you room to spend time together dining and unwinding. If you’re the kind of people who love being together as a group but also appreciate your own space, this is perfect; it works so well for families with very young children or for multi-generational groups with older folk who like to turn in early. In the gardens there’s a wood-fired hot tub, 2 unusual outdoor baths, and a trampoline; there's table tennis and air hockey – in other words, something for all ages.

The local area has lots to see and do; if you like walking you can set out from the doorstep and you’ll soon find footpaths and trails that take you deep into the beautiful countryside. The Somerset Levels are rich in history and wildlife; stroll along the rhynes (pronounced REENS) where willows dip their leaves into the water and swans glide gracefully along. Pootle up the road to Coates English Willow at Stoke St Gregory where you can watch basket making demonstrations, see the displays in the little museum and stop by for a slice of cake in the café. There’s a good walk along the River Tone to Burrow Mump; climb to the top for panoramic views stretching out across the landscape then amble back down to The King Alfred Inn for a pub lunch

Go to Langport and follow the River Parret to Mucheleny where you can visit the ruined abbey (English Heritage) and The Priest’s House (National Trust). At Parrett Trail Bikes you can hire bikes and with map in hand set off to explore at your own pace, or go down to Maunsel Lock where you can hire self-drive boats, canoes and paddleboards for an afternoon on the waters of the Taunton to Bridgwater Canal.

If you fancy a day in the town, head to Taunton to browse the shops, play footgolf or have fun on the high ropes course at Vivary Golf and Adventure Centre, and delve back through the centuries at the Museum of Somerset. For family days out there are award-winning attractions within easy reach, like Haynes Motor Museum, Lytes Cary Manor and Montacute House (both NT). It’s not far to Glastonbury where you can visit the once magnificent abbey said to be the resting place of King Arthur and his queen, Guinevere. Wander the colourful streets and soak up the New Age vibe, spend a while in the tranquil Chalice Well gardens, or climb to the top of the famous Tor. Further afield, Wookey Hole makes for a great day out with the kids, or there’s the small city of Wells with its glorious cathedral and 14th century Bishop’s Palace.

In about an hour you can be on the Jurassic Coast to spend days by the sea; at Lyme Regis you can go on a mackerel fishing trip or an exhilarating rib ride around the bay. Get close to marine life in the little aquarium, see a 73kg lump of dinosaur dung at Dinosaurland Fossil Museum.

There’s so much to see and do, but the chances are you’ll be quite content to while away the hours at Whimbrels Barton, being happy together, making wonderful memories. Special times with special people – book today!
