From the doorstep a short stroll through the fields takes you to Dowlish Wake, a picturesque village of golden Hamstone cottages; stop for lunch at The New Inn, or amble up the road to Perry's Cider to sit in the orchard and sip traditionally made cider and stock up on local goodies at the farm shop.

Just a mile away is Ilminster, a quiet market town where there are supermarkets and independent shops to browse, including an award-winning butchers and a well-stocked greengrocers. If antiques and vintage are your thing wander up the hill to No 57; whilst you're there pull up a chair and have a bite to eat. Take a trip with the family to Haynes Motor Museum, Wildwood Escot, Fleet Air Arm Museum, Ferne Animal Sanctuary or Axe Valley Wildlife Park; also within easy reach are The Donkey Sanctuary, and Wells with its glorious cathedral and moated Bishop's Palace. In half an hour or so you can be on the coast so if you fancy a day at the seaside head for Regency Sidmouth or Lyme Regis where you can visit the Marine Aquarium and Dinosaurland Fossil Museum; play mini golf in the town gardens overlooking Lyme Bay, catch a mackerel fishing trip out to sea or take an exhilarating Rib Ride. Eat crab sandwiches at Ducky's Beach Café down on the beach at Beer, ride the miniature train at Pecorama and see the awe-inspiring underground cathedral at Beer Quarry Caves. Branscombe is a peaceful coastal village where you can watch blacksmiths at work in one of the oldest thatched forges in the country, have lunch by the shore at The Sea Shanty and head over the cliffs for a walk on the South West Coast Path.

The West Country is well known for its spectacular scenery so go off for a day discovering the heather clad moors and lush river valleys of Exmoor National Park, see the bracken covered heaths of the Quantock Hills, or closer to home, explore the ramparts at Ham Hill Country Park or Castle Neroche. Have a stroll around Wayford Woods or Otterhead Lakes, soak up the tranquillity of the Axe estuary at Axmouth; whatever you do, you can come back to Churchill 20, sit out on the balcony and watch the sun set over the hills.
