On the doorstep are the ruggedly beautiful Quantock Hills. Get out there and explore, take a picnic to Cothelstone Hill or Wills Neck and enjoy the views, or find a cosy country inn to stop at for a relaxing pint or a lazy pub lunch; just a very short drive away are The Farmers Arms at Combe Florey, The Rising Sun at West Bagborough and The Blue Ball Inn at Triscombe - all are good and the welcome is warm. Take a steam train to the coast with the West Somerset Railway, alight at Watchet, Blue Anchor or Minehead, make sandcastles, have fish and chips on the beach, roll up your trousers and have a paddle.

In about an hour you can be on the World Heritage Site Jurassic Coast where you can go fossil hunting and rockpooling at Charmouth, visit Dinosaurland Fossil Museum and the Marine Aquarium at Lyme Regis, or take an exhilarating rib ride around Lyme Bay. See the incredible Beer Quarry Caves and ride on the trains at Pecorama at Beer, then go down to the beach for crab sandwiches or a cream tea at Ducky's Beach Café. Branscombe is a delight, a picturesque coastal village where centuries old thatched cottages line the lane that slopes gently down to the shore. Hold on tight to the rope rails as you head down the cliffs to the quiet bay at Littlecombe Shoot, take a bracing clifftop walk on the South West Coast Path.

If you want to hit the surf for the day, head down to Croyde or Ilfracombe on the North Devon Coast for some of the best surfing waters in the UK. Take a trip to Exmoor National Park to discover the steep wooded valleys, lush rivers and heather topped heaths where red deer and wild ponies feed. See the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps, ride the Victorian Cliff Railway at Lynton and Lynmouth and stroll out to the Valley of Rocks to see the wild goats. If you want shops go to Taunton where you'll find a range of high street and independent stores and plenty of places to eat; play on the high ropes at Vivary Golf and Adventure Centre, visit The Museum of Somerset or go tenpin bowling on the outskirts of town. Have a family day out to Tropiquaria Wildlife Park, Exmoor Owl & Hawk Centre or Wookey Hole.
