Venture over to Lorna Doone Valley, go to Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre, see the picturesque thatched cottages at Selworthy and stop for tea and cake at Periwinkle Tea Room.

The Quantock Hills are within easy reach too, wild and rugged, with a beauty of their own. Stroll up through sun dappled coombes to the high heaths, take in the far-reaching views across to Wales from Wills Neck, the highest point in the hills, visit Coleridge Cottage at Nether Stowey. Wind up at one of the cosy country inns for a hearty homemade lunch.

Take family trips to the coast and play on the sands at Blue Anchor, getting there by steam train with the West Somerset Railway. Hunt for fossils on Kilve beach, head down to Croyde or Woolacombe for some of the best surfing waters in the UK, or have a day out on the East Devon Coast. The kids will love Tropiquaria Wildlife Park or Donnington Farm Park, you’ll all enjoy a visit to Knightshayes or a leisurely ride on a horse-drawn barge along the Grand Western Canal at Tiverton.

Of course, you may not feel the need to go anywhere, other than to pop into Wiveliscombe, just a couple of miles away, for a browse of the independent shops and a pizza at The Bear Inn.
