SANDFIELD HOUSE - Somerset

Sandfield House is a large and very charming country house in a private setting in the Somerset countryside. With snooze space for 14 + 2*, an outdoor heated pool, indoor swim spa, sauna, games room, tennis court and children's play area it's the perfect house to rent for big family holidays, peaceful celebrations, refined hen weekends and self-catering corporate breaks. Inside is light and airy with wonderful period features and plenty to keep you entertained, outside is the large pool terrace leading on to vast sweeping lawns surrounded by mature trees; there's heaps of space for outdoor activities and for children to run around and play.

Sandfield House is only a few miles from the M5 (J26) and just a very short drive from Tiverton where trains run to London Paddington in under 3 hours; once you get here it's like you have a world of your own, far, far away from the hectic pace of life.

Just a stone's throw away is Wellington, where you'll find supermarkets and good independent shops; if you go on market day take a big basket and fill it with local goodies, go in the evening to watch the latest big film at the Art Deco style cinema. If browsing around towns and cities is your thing, head over to Taunton and visit the Museum of Somerset or go and play on the high ropes at Vivary Golf and Adventure Centre; whizz down to Exeter to see the beautiful Gothic cathedral, take a tour of the medieval Underground Passages, go paddle boarding down at the Quay.

Set off from the doorstep for a walk in the fresh air; follow footpaths through the fields, or get out into the Blackdown Hills for a good explore. Climb to the top of Culm Beacon, marvel at the views then head back down to the Culm Valley Inn for lunch, or amble up to Wellington Monument and go into town for afternoon tea at Odette's Tea Rooms. Make a day of it - venture over to Exmoor National Park where you can make a summit bid at Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on the moors; stroll along the river at Watersmeet, cross the famous clapper bridge at Tarr Steps, or explore the beautiful Lorna Doone Valley. Take the young 'uns to Exmoor Zoo, to Doniford Farm Park, or to discover the spooky dungeons at Dunster Castle. The rufty-tufty Quantock Hills aren't far either and are great for a day spent finding new places - the quaint little villages, the sun dappled coombes and the bracken clad heaths where wild ponies graze.

Have a day out pootling through the countryside on an old-fashioned steam train with the West Somerset Railway, take the family down to Crealy Adventure Park, see the animals at Tropiquaria Wildlife Park, or for time spent by the sea drive over to the Jurassic Coast. The beaches there all have their own character, from the peaceful fishing villages of Beer and Branscombe to historic Lyme Regis and Regency Sidmouth. Closer to home you can pop up to Sheppy's Cider for a tour of the factory, enjoy the tranquillity of Hestercombe House & Gardens, or drift along the Grand Western Canal at Tiverton on a horse-drawn barge.
