Flossy Brook is tucked away in large private grounds in the Blackdown Hills AONB in Somerset. Just down the road is the quiet village of Bishopswood, all around is unspoilt countryside. The lodge is light and airy, spacious yet homely, and very well-equipped; 5 bedrooms sleep 12 people, with room for 2 more at an extra charge per person, there's an indoor heated pool and table football. Outside is a big south facing patio, a play fort and trampoline, and a fenced in wildlife area with a pond. With plenty to see and do in the local area this is the perfect base for big family holidays, large group celebrations, refined hen weekends and self-catering corporate breaks.

Flossy Brook is perfectly placed for exploring the glorious countryside around these parts; a 5 minute stroll away is Bishopswood Meadows Local Nature Reserve, in the hills nearby there are footpaths and trails to walk. Put on your boots, pack a picnic and go and take in the fresh air and beautiful scenery at Castle Neroche, Otterhead Lakes or Staple Hill. Make a list of attractions to visit in this neck of the woods and tick them off one by one; the little ones will like Ferne Animal Sanctuary, garden lovers will enjoy a visit to East Lambrook Manor, Hestercombe House or Barrington Court. Discover the time-honoured tradition of cider making at Perry's Cider Mills in Dowlish Wake, stop for a pint in the orchard, fill your basket in the farm shop. Pootle over to the Somerset Levels to soak up hundreds of years of history at Muchelney Abbey, Wells Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace and Glastonbury Abbey.

If you're planning a day trip or two when you're staying at Flossy Brook, the choice is vast. Catch a steam train from Bishops Lydeard with the West Somerset Railway and alight at Blue Anchor or Minehead for sea air, get off at Dunster to see the castle on the hill and walk along the leat to the working flour mill. Head over to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site where the beaches are all very different, each with its own charm and appeal. Stroll along the promenade, play on the sands and have tea in the cliff top gardens at Sidmouth, Take the kids to Dinosaurland Fossil Museum and the Marine Aquarium at Lyme Regis, have a mackerel fishing trip and ride the miniature steam train at Pecorama in Beer. Venture over to the Quantock Hills where you can explore on foot or by bike; climb to the highest summit, Wills Neck, or up through the woods at Holford Combe for spectacular views out over the bracken clad heaths, visit Coleridge Cottage at Nether Stowey or play Giant Jenga at Fyne Court. Have an excursion in Exmoor National Park, go to Watersmeet for a cream tea and a stroll along the river, see the unusual clapper bridge over the River Barle at Tarr Steps, enjoy the tranquillity at Porlock Weir and the panoramic views from Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on the moors.

If shopping's your thing you'll like Taunton, Exeter, and Clark's Village, where you can bag bargains galore. For a more leisurely browse round a traditional market town go to Ilminster or Honiton, for family fun Crealy Theme Park & Resort, Haynes Motor Museum, and Wookey Hole are all within easy reach. Sometimes though, you just want the simple pleasure of a laid-back pub lunch; wander down the road to The Candlelight Inn, or just a few miles away, The Holman Clavel and The Greyhound at Staple Fitzpaine are good. Relaxing days, happy memories.
