Chateau La Chutlière & The Stables are set in the most gorgeous 23 acres grounds, tucked away in the heart of the Poitou-Charentes region. The Loire Valley is to the north, Cognac to the south, and the Atlantic coast to the west, and yet it can be reached in less than 5 hours from London.
You might want to just stay put in your own world at Chateau La Chutelière & The Stables, and honestly, who could blame you, with everything you need and such perfect surroundings? A big cinema room, a gym and games room, your own private pool and 23 acres of grounds to roam, and it’s all utterly idyllic.
If you do want go and explore this neck of the woods, start with a stroll down to the tiny village of La Ferrière to buy freshly baked bread; not much further in Chalandray there’s a mini market where you can stock up with essentials. Go to Parthenay where there’s an old castle and ramparts, and a wonderful medieval quarter with quirky half timbered buildings. In Poitiers there are shops, bars and cafes to discover, and a must see is the Romanesque church of Notre Dame La Grande, with its exquisitely carved façade.
For family days out – well! Where to start?! Monkey Valley should go down well, as will the Falconry and Wildlife Park at Chauvigny, or Palmyre Zoo at Royan. Equally exciting are Futuroscope Science Park and Puy de Foy Historical Theme Park near Cholet. How about a trip to Angers or Roche Carbon Castle, to the Roman Amphitheatre at Saintes, or the beautiful underground church at Aubterre-sur-Dronne? Something that’s hard to beat is a day spent on France’s ‘Green Venice’, the Marais Poitevin; explore the canals by kayak or flat bottomed barque, or ride around the towpaths on bikes or in a horse drawn carriage.
But if all you want to do is idle the days away strolling around the grounds, lazing by the pool, enjoying leisurely al fresco lunches, we understand. It’s all part of the charm; perfect for regrouping, big family holidays and self catering or catered corporate breaks.
