There really is no shortage of ideas for things to see and do in the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean.

Houses & Gardens

Like many gardens, the Lydney Park grounds and Lydney Park Spring Gardens have evolved over time. The original house at Lydney Park was surrounded by a Pleasure Garden and a large walled garden, which backed onto the Deer Park. Over time many impressive, exotic and rare trees have been planted in the Deer Park by successive generations of the family.

Some of the original formal gardens at Lydney Park were cleared to grow potatoes during the Second World War, leaving a blank canvas for the second Lord and Lady Bledisloe. As a result in the 1950's, a paved terrace, two fountain pools, hedges and lawns were introduced into the garden together with a major replanting programme - the result is an impressive display of spring colour. Flowering Cherries, Magnolias, scented spring flowering shrubs and drifts of spring bulbs provide a stunning entrance to Lydney Park Gardens.

Puzzlewood is a unique and enchanting ancient woodland, located in the beautiful and historic Forest of Dean. Explore a mile of meandering pathways, with its fantastic tree and rock formations and an atmosphere quite unlike any other wood you have visited. JRR Tolkien is reputed to have taken his inspiration for the fabled forests of Middle Earth from Puzzlewood. A host of film and TV programmes have been filmed there.

The Jubilee Maze is one of Britain’s most famous traditional hedge mazes, with a romantic temple at the centre and over a kilometre of hedges. It was planted by Lindsay and Edward Heyes in 1977.

Find your way then play! This maze is a great place to play tag or Marco Polo with all the family. Not up to running around? Play by stealth! There’s a viewing platform for calling directions... but who can you trust?

Museums & Zoos

Big Pit is a real coal mine and one of Britain's leading mining museums. With facilities to educate and entertain all ages, Big Pit is an exciting and informative day out.

The Caves are an important, but until now, a little known part of the Forest of Dean's history and environment.

Slimbridge is home to an astounding array of wildlife including the world's largest collection of swans.

You can walk with butterflies from around the world. Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo is indoors, it’s tropical and it’s teeming with exotic butterflies.
