South Coast Focus - Beer to Boats

Quite possibly one of my favourite parts of the UK is the South West Coastline from the impressive Jurassic Coast to the stunning South Hams. Having spent most of my life in this part of the world I feel passionately that everyone should experience the rejuvenating feeling of looking out to sea from this coastline.

This blog features some of this coastline and the properties that can be booked in order to experience first hand what this part of the country has to offer. I wont stop everywhere - there is plently of time for that and you should go in search of things yourself! So sit back and get a feel for my part of the UK.

Starting in Beer, a pretty little sheltered beach, my top tip is to seek out some fresh local produce and have a picnic or visit one of the three beach cafes for a bite to eat. Mackerel trips take place daily from May to October so if you want to experience life on the sea then I highly suggest you book a trip. Beer is also a perfect sunbathing spot as the beach is well sheltered you really can pass the day people watching.

With properties such as Knowles, Upcott House and Lodge as well as Stanhope House right on the doorstep you could turn this afternoon of fun into a lovely traditional holiday on the coast.

Book one of these properties at the start of August and you have the world renowned Sidmouth Folk Week practically on your doorstep. With something for everyone from dancing and music to face paints and workshops the town of Sidmouth comes alive to welcome thousands of people. A steep stony beach with a lovely esplanade this bustling town reminds one of a past time and independent shops fill the town if you want to indulge in a spot of retail therapy.

A familiar part of this coastline is Exmouth. I have been coming here since I was a child to play on the beach and in the sea. Shallow waters and a wide expanse of sandy beach makes this a truly great place for children. Rock pools exposed at low tide and a great place for water sports means that a family has plenty to do if they stay at The Beach House Exmouth (read more about the house by clicking on the picture below). A short drive inland from Exmouth is Topsham. Once a busy port it now evokes a leisurely way of life. With antique shops and a large variety of different pubs and restaurants it makes a lovely setting for an evening out.

Not too far away are the new properties Oak Tree House and River View. These large properties are ideal for a big family get away or party complete with indoor pools and sleeping up to 27 people. Why not stop off at Darts Farm during your stay? Recently voted the best farm shop to pick up the essentials most of which is produced right there in Devon.

Working my way down the coast my last stop for now is The South Hams. Amazingly beautiful it boasts an almost mediterranean like feel. The sun seems ‘sunnier’, the sea bluer and the sky more dazzling! Home to famously chic places such as Dartmouth and Salcombe you can be sure to greeted by a touch of class! With harbours full of visiting Yachts you will also still see the locals out with their boats going about their daily lives which makes this a great place to visit. If you want a slightly quieter experience head to Hope Cove where the curved harbour and beach allows plenty of fun and games!

Our two properties Lambside House and Corner Cottage are a short drive away and are situated in a truly stunning setting.  Perfect for families the properties are also dog friendly and surrounded by fantastic walks and working farmland.

Why not come and visit for yourself, come and find out what living so close to this amazing part of the country is like for us. We love it here and really want you to as well. Who knows you may never want to leave!
